Firing Pots in a Clamp Kiln
Very small fire is laid in shallow pit
Raft of logs is laid
over embers
Pots are added, up-side-down on logs.  Logs turn to charcoal and
so pots are presumable still resting on these when kiln is opened.
Will be able to observe this when kiln is opened on Thurs.
Wigwam of twigs placed around
structure
Adding turf
. . . greenery
. . . and soil to seal out air
Three little clamp kilns
Pots broken to show effects of different methods of firing.
Blackened ones were cooked for 24 hrs in an open fire and are easily broken.
Orange ones were fired much more slowly in a clamp kiln over three days and are
much stronger.
After 24 hrs temperature in clamp kiln has reached 700 deg C
Pots fired in this way have small pieces of broken pots, sand or gravel mixed with the clay, which stops
them from exploding while being fired.
